Road Trip Essentials Checklist

I’ve done a lot of traveling in my time. From a motorhome in Chile’s Atacama Desert to northern Thailand, The American Southwest and even Tahiti, there’s nothing more liberating than taking your own vehicle and sticking to your own schedule.

Since this is one of my favorite ways to travel, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned over the years from road trips around the world. This is my ultimate checklist, the only one you’ll ever need:

Maybe you take your own car, or maybe it’s a rental car. Either way, there are a few absolute essentials, as well as things that will make the trip easier and a little sweeter:

  • License and registration
  • Auto insurance
  • An extra set of car keys
  • Car manual
  • Spare tire and jack
  • Foldable shopping bag
  • Cooler
  • Emergency tool kit
  • Bag
  • Handsfree phone holder
  • Travel pillows and blankets
  • Car trash can or reusable trash bag
  • Liquids and an empty gas cylinder in a matter of tripping on the road in remote places
  • Sanitary spray and/or wipes and car air freshener
  • UV blinds
  • Car chain and snow kit when you travel on the road in winter

Enjoyment and goodies that will make a big difference

  • An offline music playlist and headphones (not everyone wants to listen to the same song 5 times)
  • Kindle and audiobooks (click here to listen to some of my favorite audiobooks on the go)
  • iPad (for after-night Netflix, if needed)
  • Material for writing
  • Maps. me app for offline maps (great for trails too!)

  • Cash for admission to the State Park
  • Camera for fantastic photo shoots

The essence of the recent times road trip

  • Refreshing face mask with UV shield
  • Hand sanitizer (this one from Dr. Bronner smells good and isn’t gloopy)
  • Documentation: proof of vaccination and/or negative PCR test documents (check each of your chosen destinations to see what you need)
  • I hope this has helped you find more convenience for your next road trip. Knowing what to bring and taking the guesswork out of it makes it so much easier and so much more fun.
